The characters are so vivid, and the plot threatens to break your heart.
There is one scene near the end that takes place among Ciro, Enza and their son that just broke my heart, and the beauty and sadness of it was both private and universal at the same time. Their ease of conversation and their friendly exchange leaves them shoemakfrs smitten with each other…forever.

A father teaches his son how to think a wire through, how to lead a household, how to love his wife. A spark is struck, though it will be many years and many missed chances before Trigiani allows them to bring it to full flame. She isn't the MC; but it is a "pretty" title. Without explanation, he leaves a bereft Enza behind.
They were kind of lovable. This is a perfect book club read - it's lavish, beautiful, and filled with a little bit of every type of perfection. How would ahoemakers describe his relationship with those around him?
These characters are based in part on Trigiani's grandparents. This is NOT a sappy love story. At the end of the novel, Enza agrees to return to Italy with Antonio and Angela. If rrigiani start this book, you are not going to want to put it down.
Finally, a book about early Italian immigrants that does not involve the mafia. All I can say is this epic tale grabs you and refuses to let go. The first part in Italy was lovely, and the next part in New York had some shining moments, but on the whole, I would not pass this one along to a friend. This is the kind of book that makes you wish the author were a friend of yours, because at this point, you want to call her ahoemakers the middle of the night and beg her to let these nice young people get on with it.
